CCIE Study Material Review - Pro2Expert

I've been starting to catch up on some parts of my life that were put on hold while the CCIE studies were in full swing, so postings here will continue just rather sporadically.

A few weeks before I attempted my lab exam, Greg Chisholm (CCIE #29271) gave me a complimentary copy of his Pro2Expert CCIE study and strategy guide to review.  The main audience for this document is someone that has completed or near completion of their CCNP (the Pro) and is considering heading towards the CCIE (the Expert).  It is also tentatively pitched at those that have attempted the CCIE lab exam but have not come up trumps and are wanting to find an alternate focus.

While this document does have a reasonable amount of technical content, it's probably more focused on CCNPs that are wanting to look at an intermediate step before going all in for the depth of knowledge that will be required for face off for the lab exam, I guess the thinking here is that if this is either stuff you know like the back of your hand or at least doesn't overwhelm you, then maybe you're in a position to start developing your studies.

While the technical content was reasonable, to me personally and most likely those that have faced the expensive lunch already, what's there is rather shallow.  In each of the technical chapers, Greg includes a "--More--" section which provides more references to go into to grasp a more detailed understanding.

My favourite part of the document though was the writing style, it felt very conversational in style and personal because Greg was able to leverage his own experiences in sitting the lab exam multiple times, dealing with blueprint changes and finally getting over the line.  It was good to be able to read his story, draw some inspiration but more importantly gain some extra thoughts and clarification on workflow optimisations where if you start on these early on into your studies, you can more easily avoid fat-fingered mistakes when you are feeling pressure, some of these things may seem straightforward and obvious but in my own case I definitely picked up a few tips that I should have been aware of much earlier.

Early on in the document there is a section describing how to select components to build your own lab environment and do things such as connecting servers to test things like netflow, snmp, http etc which is adequate for self directed study, however I personally would have thought that there could be some value in including a selection on why you may select a CCIE workbook training vendor and what kind of features (e.g. community, reputation, topology size, errata on material etc.) may be used to help select the vendor and then help select what you may do for lab practice (build a lab, rent time on a lab, do simulation or some combination of the lot)  personally I think that this is something worth dwelling upon particularly if you coming from a CCNP looking at going for the CCIE because part of your study plan will be putting together a timetable of equipment/services and working out when and where you have to spend your money, whether this is sponsored by your employer or yourself you need to budget time and money.    Please note has Greg has told me this is an area he plans to address in a future iteration of the document.  I will endeavour to update this review once this occurs but if this topic is of interest - I suggest you get in contact with Greg directly

For those that have not faced the CCIE R&S Written Exam yet,  you will not currently see anything specific about this exam, however to be fair the CCIE R&S Version 4 Certification Guide is probably a better resource on facing this exam.  Greg did mention that he plans to provide a write up on the written exam once he recertifies his CCIE as he prefers to be more specific than give generalised tips on something he faced quite some time back.

Pro2Expert arrives on a a watermarked PDF that is just over 560 pages in length.  I didn't attempt to print it out, however it did work fine on my Amazon Kindle.  The document does not touch every aspect on the CCIE R&S Blueprint.

The introductory price for Greg's Pro2Expert document is $US90 and may increase at a later date.  I received my copy for free in exchange for providing this review, Greg was more than happy for me to review the document in any way that I wanted and in areas I thought may need further development he took those thoughts into serious consideration.

Final thoughts:  In comparison to most of CCIE related study material which tends to focus directly on the technical side of things which of course is extremely important - this guide's greatest strengths to me at least is the human side and the workflow aspects.  If you are considering going for the CCIE, this guide may be a worthwhile investment before on embarking on a long, tentatively expensive but educational journey.  If you have faced the lab on multiple occasions and are at your wits end on where to go further and don't think the problems you are facing are technical in nature, perhaps you can draw inspiration from Greg's words but at this point in time I'm unsure that this will be what's needed to give you that extra push.

My CCIE Journey

It's taken a bit longer to get to this point than I had originally planned when I started on this journey but I'm glad to be here.

Tuesday, July 10 2012 was my fifth attempt at the CCIE R&S Lab.  The day started well enough, the Sydney lab is pretty good and the proctor is a friendly enough guy (having been there quite a few times, he recognised me but thankfully I hadn't been there enough that he recalled my name!)

When the troubleshooting section commenced I was able to address the easier tickets in relatively short order, however the three pointers took considerably longer but were not impossible (it actually ended up being one of those issues where it was staring me in the face but it took a bit of time to realise it) and ended up closing them out with about 10 minutes left on the clock giving ample time to go to the front and validate that they were still resolved and within the confines of the restrictions.

Each of my lab attempts displayed improvement in my troubleshooting skills (my first attempt resulted in me getting steamrolled in TS, the second attempt I was much better but with plenty of room for improvement, and the third I missed passing by what seemed one ticket, finally passing TS in the fourth attempt) this time round it felt like I had solidly addressed all faults, so I was able to proceed into configuration with a fair amount of confidence.

The Configuration component was traditionally an area I did well in - except for attempt number 4 where I just couldn't quite get my groove on and fell apart - this was quite unfortunate since this happened to be the first time I got through TS.  Fortunately this time around I was able to enter "the zone"  relatively quickly and get my layer 2 sorted out and get most of the IGP config complete before lunch.  The coke I drank at lunch much have given me enough of a jolt to blast through the BGP, services and other config pieces to result in a reasonable amount of verification time to spare, which was fortunate, my tcl and ping macros helped pick up a few simple but potentially costly mistakes and extra validation of various config components highlighted a number of minor corrections that I needed to make.

I left the lab location feeling quietly confident and after flying home, waiting in my inbox was that email with the subject "CCIE Lab Score Report".  I rushed to the website was very pleased to the see the "PASS" and an allocation of a number on that very 90's style webpage, resulting in a happy conclusion to this journey.

I made use of material from IPExpert (Video on Demand, Workbook Volume 1 and 3) , Internet Expert (Audio Bootcamp and Mocklabs) and Micronics training (Narbik's famous bootcamp and troubleshooting workbook) each has a slightly different way of building your expertise and understanding which can be helpful if you are having problems in grasping a specific concept. All are high quality products from top class vendors with good support from the people within the organisations.

I also did a number of the Cisco360 Mocklabs and found their TS scenarios were commensurate with the lab environment with a roughly equivalent topology and level of faults though sometimes I found the configuration labs sometimes easier or of similar difficulty to the actual lab.  Regardless of the vendor, any mock lab is good to ensure you've got the stamina and can work against the clock.

Mailing lists like Groupstudy, IPExpert's OSL and INE's IEOC Forum were very valuable in helping hone my knowledge and also reminding me that I'm not alone on what is pretty much a solo voyage. These resources are worth their weight in gold for inspiration and support.

Also, it must be said that while I was the one that passed the exam, it was only made possible thanks to the understanding and support of my wonderful wife which is something I am truly lucky and grateful for her being there and believing I can get there even though there were several faulty attempts.

IOS Based traffic generation with tcp-small-servers

Recently I was watching the INE vSeminar on OER - 7.5 hours of well I wouldn't exactly call it joy but it is certainly enlightening on how the performance routing (the current name for optimized edge routing) "works" in an IOS 12.4(15)T environment.   The version number is of relevance as that is currently what the CCIE Lab uses, however based on my own experiences and seeing the vSeminar, while quite powerful and flexible, it is also kind of fragile while you try to develop your configuration.

Anyway one of the interesting things that came out of it wasn't directly related to OER itself except that it needed some traffic flows to take actions upon and rather than purely using on pings, Brian demoed a different technique that used TCP traffic flows by enable "service tcp-small-servers" on the router you would like to generate the traffic from, and telneting on port 19 from where you would like the traffic sent.

Enabling tcp-small-servers enables the chargen service on TCP Port 19.  Other services such as echo, discard and daytime are enabled but aren't so helpful when it comes to traffic generation.

Back to Basics

As part of my getting back to basics regime I've been going through Narbik's Advanced Routing and Switching 4.0 Workbooks.To be honest it's not basics but it's refreshing to go back to something as simple as Ethernet trunking (honestly DTP isn't something I haven't given a lot of thought to in awhile and while there was nothing earth shattering, it's good to touch base again) and incrementally re-enforce my knowledge.

One of my old favourite commands that I've been using recently is "show ip protocols" which gives such a wealth of information including timers, authentication key usage and if protocols are being redistributed.

Last night I went through a rather epic RIP lab that touched 9 routers, and now it's time to jump into EIGRP...

Cisco 360 Assessment Lab Review

Troubleshooting has been the major area in the lab exam that I have needed help in lifting my game.  I have used resources in multiple areas to give assistance and they have all helped improve my performance but I have been searching for that extra push to get there.  As previously mentioned I gave the Netmaster class updated assessment labs a spin and to be honest I found particularly in the troubleshooting area that this is the best I've come up against to simulate what you get in the real lab.

The NMC Lab is split into two parts - Troubleshooting and Configuration.  The Troubleshooting section is newer and handled differently to how the Configuration section appears.  To access the TS lab, you have to install a Cisco VPN client (the instructions you are sent a day or two before your actual sessions starts includes a download link for the VPN client as well as a test account to validate that you can connect)  Also included are recommendations to configure your web browser and telnet client which will make things easier so you can click on a router and have putty (or securecrt if that's your poison) fire up

Once your session has begun and you have connected to the VPN, you go to a web page which has the tickets and the network diagrams.  The major difference is that there appears to be 3 hours allocated for TS rather than 2.  I used a timer to force myself to stop after 2 hours to make it as real as possible.  The troubleshooting section is based on the Cisco IOU platform and supports approximately 30 routers.  Unlike the actual lab exam, this doesn't include simulated catalyst platforms, so it's not 100% accurate but is close enough for the majority of tickets you might actually encounter in the real thing and appears to cover all of the technologies in the blueprint.  The types of questions in this simulation are actually more vague than what I recall seeing in the actual lab itself which can be a little annoying, however if you can deal with those you will probably find the actual lab a bit easier.

The configuration section in the lab was a 6 hour configuration section using real routers and switches.  The copyright date of the exam was 2009 and the presentation was not web based - the questions were in a PDF file.  Although the actual config lab these days is usable via a web interface to read questions/see diagrams and no printed material is given, I would actually recommend that you print the configuration section questions out so you can get easy reference to the diagrams otherwise there will be a lot of scrolling up and down.  I found the config lab to be a nice challenge and I guess of similar level to what I have encountered in the real lab.

The timing of events were 3 hours for TS, 1 hour break, 6 hours of Config (I stopped TS after 2 hours so ended up with a 2 hour break in between)  The good thing about the Cisco 360 labs as far as booking the lab session itself is that the booking is based on a local timezone to the student allowing a good deal of flexibility compared to other rack vendors.   The other component that I liked was the automatic grading gave results and feedback in approximately 90 minutes after completion and included a comprehensive marking system and answer key and even a web based system that allows you to compare your configurations against the working reference as well as performing show commands for status and configurations.  The Cisco 360 assessment labs are more expensive than other vendors (approximately twice the cost of some) however with the most up to date version of the Troubleshooting scenario, richer and faster results and feedback and flexible booking times do help offset the higher costs.

What was interesting for my particular session was after the assessment lab, a group mentoring session was held which focused only on the TS component.  Things that were discussed included NMC's recommended strategy for attempting questions as well as an indepth dive into addressing all of the tickets in the assessment lab we did.  This group session was the first time it was run, and while I did find it useful considering it ran for 2.5 hours - I don't think I would attend it against, particularly since it was held at 3am my local time on a Thursday morning (thank goodness for caffeinated beverages or I wouldn't have survived the day at work)


I found the updated TS component in the Cisco 360 Assessment Labs to be very helpful.  There are a number of labs available.  If you are interested in doing one of these, some of the labs listed on their site are the older TS versions that don't use the IOU environment - so if you want the new labs (highly recommended) take care and select labs that have "TC" in the ordering code.  At the time I'm posting the updated labs are

More Troubleshooting Focus

The blog has been a little quiet lately but I have still been playing with routers in the background.  As part of the Micronics Training Bootcamp I attended back in May, some of the Cisco 360 assessment lab material was included, basically it had some Mock Labs that at least for the configuration portion was pretty much on par as what the actual lab itself presented.  At the time, the troubleshooting material was very similar as to what you find with other vendors, not bad at all but based on the same physical topology as the configuration components.

Netmasterclass who I believe developed a lot of the Cisco 360 material, have recently reworked the way they provide the troubleshooting environment, and it is now based on Cisco IOU just like the real lab, as this is a virtual environment it is mean to span about 30 devices - I'm uncertain as to whether switches are included in the topology, however I think having to deal with such a large environment will be a good thing.  There is quite a rich level of instrumentation and feedback from the Cisco 360 labs, so it should be quite helpful in pinpointing weak points.  I have just signed up for a Troubleshooting and mentoring package which includes the lab and a group mentoring session that should help unveil common issues that others may be encountering as well.  Due to the timezone differences, it means it will be a 3am session in the middle of the week for me which is a little annoying; however I will be making every attempt to be there regardless (hopefully I wont be too fragile at work the next day)

I have my next lab attempt scheduled for December, hopefully this will assist me in getting over the line.

Troubleshooting Workbook

As my lab attempt revealed, my troubleshooting technique isn't as good as I thought it was.  As such I've been going through the Micronics Troubleshooting workbook which was written by Narbik and Dan Shechter.  So far I find it pretty helpful.

It comes with 10 Troubleshooting labs following the Narbik topology,  it ships with two Locklizard PDFs - one is just questions only, and the other with the answers for verification or when you finally give up.  Each lab has around 15 tickets which encompass routers and switches.  Currently I've been allocating myself 2 hours per lab.  Some tickets I can resolve very quickly, others take a bit of time to identify and resolve the problem - it's good though.

Although its a very small thing, I have stopped using Putty Connection Manager and have gone back to untabbed Putty windows with the "Always on top" and "Right Click = menu" which is what the lab environment uses - when I encountered this in the lab I found it a little disconcerting particulary during the troubleshooting when there were on the order of 30 possible devices to work with.  It wasn't the cause of me failing that section, it just help fluster me a little.  Already I am taking this into my workflow and learning to close down sessions that I don't actively require, while a very small thing on the scheme of things.  I think it might give a slight advantage next time I sit the lab (BTW it is possible during the lab to change the settings of Putty but I would rather save those few minutes of terminal configuration to be used for solving tickets)

Drinking from the Firehose (Narbik's Bootcamp Review)

Caution: Big wall of Text Warning!  If you're a TL:DR (Too long: Didn't Read) type of person maybe skip this post or just jump down to the conclusion.
 
At the time of writing (the Saturday after the bootcamp) I'm still recovering from the marathon Routing and Switching bootcamp that was run by Narbik from Micronics Training in Sydney, Australia between May 23 2011 and May 27 2011 but I wanted to give some impressions as to what I thought about it because when the opportunity to take a bootcamp came up, I wanted to be sure that I was spending my money (and time) wisely.  This is obviously all my opinion about my experience but I figure I'll try to give as much relevant information as to the bootcamp and the surrounding environent as possible because if you're going to be spending a lot of money on a bootcamp especially if its your own you want to know what your in for and what you get and what you need.  Your experience may be slightly different even if you do it in Sydney.

The class size with around 14 students with slightly more depending.  The reason for the slightly more is that once you have attended one of Narbik's bootcamps you are welcome to re-attend it for free.  Please note that this doesn't cover the Cisco 360 material (I'll get into that shortly) nor the use of Narbik's lab equipment (however you can rent a lab for what appears to be a very modest fee indeed, use your own rack at home if you have remote access, or simulate the topology using dynamips but accepting that you wont be able to do the advanced Cat 3560 features).  So during the bootcamp there were a few guys who popped in for a couple of days to brush up on some of the topics.   Actually when I asked the re-attendees if what was being presented was exactly the same, they mentioned that the information itself didn't really change but that in some areas Narbik was presented in a slightly different but more easily to understand manner which suggests that he's continuously refining his delivery method based on feedback.

Our class was located right in the Sydney Central Business District - initially on the website (before the class was 100% confirmed - I believe that there is a minimum of 7 new students required before a class can take place - so if you're looking at trying to get a bootcamp happening in your area if you can get close to 6 like minded mates together, it might be worth seeing if something can be arranged) it mentioned North Sydney and listed some hotels in the area.  I had booked a hotel in North Sydney (wanting to be in easy walking distance to the training centre) so was a little surprised when the venue had changed to the Sydney CBD itself (fortunately I didn't pre-pay my accomodation so I was able to re-book somewhere else without paying a fee) I would strongly suggest that rather than just reading the location on the website that you send an email to the people at Micronics to check.  It still may be worth foregoing any pre-payment discount just in case for whatever reason the course gets relocated or postponed)  I actually think that the different location was much better because North Sydney seems to shutdown not long after 5pm, where in the CBD is right near entertainment venues and many resturants etc so it was easy to get food at any time and there was a major grocery store (Coles) in very close proximity so getting your own supplies was easy.

Part of the way that the bootcamp costs are controlled is that you need to bring your own equipment - bring your own laptop - pretty much you just need something with a web browser and a telnet client.  While you could probably get by with linux, some of the material you get access to are locklizard protected PDFs so it might be a problem.  The material from Narbik can be read on Mac OSX but for some reason the Cisco 360 Assessment Lab Answer keys cannot be read on OSX (requiring a virtualised XP/Windows 7 instance or bootcamp to read it)  Network access provided was wireless (not so good most likely because other businesses in the building with their own wireless networks going) so I used the wired network which was very reliable and fast.  Besides bringing your own laptop, any meals, snacks, note pads, pens etc - bring that yourself.  As I said due to the location it was easy enough to be able to get your own stuff pretty much at any time (Coles for instance would open at 6am and close as midnight) with plenty of fast food options nearby with China town not that far of a jump for a more substantial feed at the end of the day if you so chose.  Actually I know a number of guys brought lunch/dinner from home and were able to use the fridge/microwave at the training centre to keep their food, so if you're on a tight budget that might help you some too.

A number of the guys in the class were Sydney based and took public transport to the site which just because they lived a fair way out could take over an hour in travel in each direction and worse outside of peak travel times.  The hours of the bootcamp are going to be longer than a typical workday, so if you are able to, it could be worth looking at getting a hotel room nearby just so you can cut down on that (there is some homework that you don't have to but if you can you should be doing - knocking out 2 hours of travel so you can do that may be a good idea, so you can get some sleep in - it's not essential but it may help you get that little bit more out of your bootcamp experience)


Okay, so you've decided you're going to do the bootcamp - you book the class, and pay your money.  Not too long later you'll get some workbooks "The Foundation Volumes 1 and 2" from Janet (Narbik's wife) that are in your interests to go through prior to attending the bootcamp.  These are the first of the locklizard protected workbooks you get.  If you have performed these labs or are familiar with the topics, you are going to get the most out of the bootcamp.  To be honest I looked through these but didn't do the labs (I have been doing my lab prepation with another training vendor's materials)  If you come to this bootcamp towards the beginning of your CCIE study journey rather than towards the end like myself, I think this material will be very beneficial and you may not need to necessarily look elsewhere.  So while there is probably an advantage to booking onto the bootcamp early to get access to these workbooks early to prepare yourself for the bootcamp, I did ask Janet if I purchased the workbooks on their own - if I would get a discount from the bootcamp fee and she indicated that this was the case.  I guess if you wanted to dip your feet in the water and de-risk things for yourself, I guess you can start with just purchasing the foundation workbooks, see if you like the labs and style (the bootcamp labs use the same topology) and then sign up for the bootcamp.   Please note that the foundation workbooks themselves are not actually used or referred to in the bootcamp and are simply there to help ensure you have the fundamentals down in order to get the most out of the bootcamp.  Coming up to the bootcamp you'll need to have a valid cisco.com account, Janet will ask you for your details since the Cisco 360 program uses those credentials to send you your relevant information and setting things up for Cisco 360 rack access.  During the bootcamp you will have access to two racks.  One rack will be a Cisco 360 rack which you really only use for the Assessment Labs and another being Narbik's.  Everyone has their own gear, there's no sharing.  Access to the labs is via a terminal server so if you prefer to have a separate telnet/ssh session for each device or just go through the terminal server and using the control shift 6 (or whatever it is - that's not the way I work my lab) you can go that way.

The day before or the day of the bootcamp, you'll get the access credentials from Cisco 360 and you'll get a bunch of other workbooks from Janet.  You'll get the Advanced Routing and Switching 4.0 Workbooks Volumes 1 and 2 - which have the worked out labs inside (other vendors may call this the detailed solution guide) You'll also get the Bootcamp 4.0 Workbook (again with worked out labs and explanations) and initial configurations for the Bootcamp Workbook labs.  These workbooks are actively being worked on and Narbik was mentioning that there are some new sections being added which will be get access to (that said these are very comprehensive as is)

The reality though, is that this is a 5 day bootcamp and there is no way to cover this all in depth, so only a limited list of the blueprint topics can be covered.  That's not to say that Narbik wont talk to you about an area you are having issues with - its just that to cover all of the topics listed with the depth required, it's impossible to touch everything (I think if you were to look at the Services portion of the blueprint you could have a dedicated bootcamp just for that)

Day 1 (Monday)
Just about everyone shows up just before 9am bright-eyed and bushy-tailed ready to get into it, if they are like me they have heard all the good things about Narbik and are wondering if he's 10 feet tall and can fix faults by staring hard at routers.  Well, he's not 10 feet tall and I don't think he stares hard at routers to fix problems, though perhaps he looks intently at telnet sessions - he's a very likable and knowledgable person.  He very quickly goes into his background and puts down what the agenda for the following days are going to be and then goes around the room asking us to talk briefly about ourselves, what we do, where we are at with our studies, if we have a lab date scheduled yet, if we have already attempted the lab and what we want to get out of the bootcamp.  If I remember correctly, at our bootcamp Multicast and MPLS were hot topics (mine was L2 QoS)

After that we pretty much jumped into the Cisco 360 lab racks and started on an 8 hour Assessment lab exam.  It wasn't the hardest of exams but I think it was good thing to do, as it helps Narbik gauge what else the class might be have problems with and can ensure that those topics are particularly re-enforced throughout the bootcamp.  Also for myself it helped to clarify what topics I might need to attention on.  The Cisco 360 Assessment Labs are automatically graded but besides being sent the answer key (this is the file that can only be opened in windows) their is a web page that takes your configs and compares them with the reference configs, allowing you to see side-by-side of what you did vs what the recommended method was.  Besides that, you could simulate the commands "show ip route", "show ip bgp summary" and many many more on the simulation and see what you had and should have seen, very nice but probably better if you had more time to review.

After the Assessment Lab we started on the switching lecture, there's a level of expectation here, so we dont go into STP and basic stuff like that, rather it's more on the security related features including port-security and dhcp snooping and a good session on Private VLANs and dot1x.  The next session goes into Frame-Relay topics.  All of these lectures are Narbik standing at a whiteboard going through the topics in what is obviously orchestrated to go through a sequence (to ensure nothing gets left out) but is certainly free-flow with active discussion with the class.  One of the things that comes to light early on is that Narbik has a great passion to teach and has a great desire to ensure that any uncertainties someone has, things are clarified using different examples until they comprehend a topic.  I think one of the things that Narbik enjoys is seeing someone's expression change from looking quizzical about something to looking satisfied that they understand the how and why.

At around 9:30pm we leave the class to go home or back to our hotels with the advice to do some of the Frame-Relay labs from the Advanced CCIE Routing and Switching lab book

Day 2 (Tuesday)
Most people show up around 9am a little tired and ready to get into it - some of the guys probably weren't quite prepared for the length of the day (and if you factor in the travel time they might have had, they would have had very little sleep if they spent a couple of hours or labs) which is really just sign of things to come.

We spent a few hours in the morning doing some more Frame Relay Labs.  The point of the bootcamp is not just to get a face full of lecture but to also play with the equipment, observe the behaviour, verify it and take advantage of Narbik (and the other students) to help clarify your problems or misunderstanding (as a student I find trying to explain how things work to someone else, helps me ensure that I actually know it)

The two topics under discussion are OSPF and EIGRP with most of the day associated with OSPF.  To be honest coming in I thought I knew OSPF pretty well but now I understand it a lot better, particularly in areas around filtering and summarisation.  Narbik made it a point to talk about things from an IOS point of view rather than what RFCs say.  Even then sometimes IOS documentation can be ambiguous at best or misleading in other cases, so whatever Narbik described as a behaviour, he was able to back what he was saying with labs in his workbook (the whole bootcamp is done that way, so he can back up anything he says with a demonstration)

At around 9:30pm we leave the class to go back and do some OSPF labs.

Day 3 (Wednesday)
Not too long after 9am most people are ready to start, the enthusiam is still there but people are starting to look a little weary but Narbik is like the Energizer Bunny and is ready to go like its his first day.  After doing more OSPF and EIGRP labs in the morning.  The main topics for the day are BGP, MPLS and L3 VPNs including the different CE-PE routing protocols and possibly implications you need to be aware of.

We finish up the around 9:00pm as Thursday was going to be a long day indeed...


Day 4 (Thursday)
Everyone is looking a little rough around the edges and kind of dreading what a long day it's going to be, that is everyone except for Narbik who is fresh as a daisy.  I've had so much coffee, that the guy at the coffee shop starts making my coffee before I order it - I've become a regular there in less than a week!

After a few hours of labbing, the QoS lectures kick in.  Starting with MLS QoS which was a particular topic I don't know if I was looking forward to as such but certainly wanted to ensure that I would help get some clarification as to how things work, particular around the srr-queue area.  The lecture was great, I've taken a lot of notes in that area now and have access to some good labs to help crystalise my thoughts further.  We then go stuck into L3 QoS primarily on FRTS and CBWFQ.

At around 6pm we started the troubleshooting portion of the Cisco 360 Assessment lab which went for about two and a half hours.

After this we had a dinner break and the Assement lab Configuration portion started at 10pm with 6 hours to complete the tasks. There was enough time for some of the locals to head home to do that component.  I stayed at the class because my hotel internet connection was pretty average and it was a short walk from the class room to the hotel.  At around 4am I saved my configs and walk to the hotel and organised a wake up call for 7:30am since I needed to get ready for check out to fly home on Friday evening.  After being pumped up on caffeine and sugar for most of the night, towards the end I was stuck in a task because the router was doing what I was telling it do to do, rather than what I though I was telling it to do :)

We were told roughly that if we were to put the level of difficulty of the Monday Assement lab as 3, that this might be considered about a 9, however this was not really analagous to the actual R&S Lab and that doing well in this was not a guarantee that you would pass the R&S Lab exam but to be used as a datapoint in determining your readiness.

That said, one of the advantages of doing this bootcamp is with the association with the Cisco 360 program, if you do well in the assessment labs, you can qualify for a free lab re-take voucher.

Day 5 (Friday)
Around 9am the classroom was half empty and those that are present are looking like extras from a zombie movie except for Narbik who looks like he has just had 2 weeks of vacation.

No one really feels like labbing this morning, so it's mainly chatting about how things went in the Assessment lab until more and more people come back to class.

The topics covered today are Multicast, and the other sub-topics we didn't quite finish on previous days (things like ZBPFW and class based policing)

Upon closing Narbik mentioned about the free re-attendance to the bootcamps for past students in the same track (as I mentioned there were some guys here doing just that) and that he expected that we treat the bootcamp as the beginning of our relationship with him, the expectation of using email and forums with him and other students to help clarify problems or concerns.

He also again re-iterated that the bootcamp didn't cover all of the topics of the blueprint, there just isnt enough time, however the workbooks (which I believe are subject to free electronic updates) do cover these topics.


Overall conclusion
I really enjoyed this bootcamp.  If I were to do things differently, I would probably have looked at attending one of Narbik's bootcamps earlier into my studies, gone through his workbooks and then re-visted his bootcamp within a few weeks of attempting the lab.  This hasn't worked out that way in my case but I think the current preparation that I have done (using material from other vendors as my prime resource) has helped me, with this bootcamp enabling me to solidify what I do know and helping to uncover what I thought I knew but didn't.  I will be attemping my lab exam in a few weeks, and I will most certainly be using the material in the workbooks as well as my notes to do my final bit of preparation.  Should I not pass on the first attempt which is a possibility, I will certainly look at taking advantage of the lab re-take voucher and again make use of the material.


The ratio of labbing to lecture was around 40:60 but that is kind of skewed with the assessment (mock labs).

Being with a bunch of people where you can talk directly and/or draw on a whiteboard your problem and get help either from Narbik or your fellow students just isn't as easy to get from mailing lists and forums (which I most certainly have used)

How do I rate the workbooks?  I haven't had enough use to give a comprehensive review but so far I think they're great, they're different in format to the other vendor's material I've used (Narbik's topology is slightly smaller but I believe is on par with the CCIE R&S Configuration topology), I don't necessarily think they're better or worse, the labs in Narbik's workbooks appear to focus on individual subtopics.

I haven't been on another bootcamp so I cant compare it to anything else.  I have used Video on Demand material which simulated a one week bootcamp and while I did get value from the VoD, a prerecorded non/dynamic environment is just not the same as being able to interact directly.

It does appear to be a program that you could follow with a single investment of the bootcamp which includes the workbooks and a training sessions from an instructor that really knows his stuff, and is passionate about transferring his knowledge to you.


I liked the idea of the mocklabs but that's probably because I'm closer to sitting the exam than most of my other classmates (plus that lab voucher is a good draw card to the bootcamp) however I do see an advantage to covering the same level of material in smaller assessment labs spread out across the days so you don't have such an overload on the second last day.  Spreading it out may mean that there is more information retained on Day 5 - Narbik mentioned that this might be on the cards for future bootcamps so get in touch with Micronics for the latest information in that area.

I kind of hope I don't come across as some kind of religious fanatic praising Narbik or his methods, I'm just attempting to help those that may be trying to determine if they want to go on a bootcamp, what they need to put in to get value, and what they get for their money for the one I went to.  Pass or fail the Lab, it will be down to the individual and not the training vendor, regardless of the training vendor and the material used, all that can do is help unlock the knowledge required but its the perserverance, determination and desire of the CCIE candidate to achieve the status.

I hope that this rather long posting should anyone read it helps someone determine if they want to go on a bootcamp what they might expect, or even if they were interested in starting their CCIE studies, how a program such as this one might help them along.  I think going for a CCIE is possibly like scaling a mountain, it's not really a race, it's something you pretty much have to do yourself but there can be people around to help you out but it's up to you to get to the peak and it's great that there is a whole community of training vendors, CCIE candidates and CCIEs and others out there helping us all to success.

Study Update (Lab attempt #1 is approaching)

With nearly three week until I face off against the lab, I'm travelling to Sydney this weekend to take part in one of Narbik's CIERS-I bootcamps - I've been warned to get plenty of sleep before hand because there's a lot of material to cover and some long days indeed including two mock lab exams.  I'm definitely looking forward to meeting Narbik and the rest of the CCIE candidates, I know at least David will be there too.

I think my preparation is going well but I'm sure it can always be better...

I've nearly completed the IPExpert Volume 3 Workbook - for those unaware of what it is about, it covers 10 simulated lab examinations each with a two hour troubleshooting and six hour configuration section.  Generally I have found these quite challenging, not in depth of technology, since the IPExpert Volume 1 Workbook did a pretty good job drilling into detailed labs focusing on specific technologies, and the IPExpert VoD has helped clarify things a lot (the biggest downside for the VoD is that lectures that cover a topic go for a couple of hours, so if you are wanting to hear about a specific sub topic it can be difficult to get to the exact stage - a recent example for me is going through the QoS material where I felt pretty comfortable with most of it but wanted to jump to the Catalyst QoS - I hope in future versions IPExpert consider breaking things down into more digestable chunks for revisting specifics)

Originally I wasn't actually planning on attending the bootcamp at all, because there is a serious cost associated with it, and also there aren't really that many training vendors that come out to Australia, so I was hoping that the VoD and plenty of self study and hooking into online resources like the fantastic Group Study and IPExperts OnlineStudyList mailing lists and forums like Internetwork Expert's as well as the multitude of great blogs and of course the Cisco documents and in all honesty I think that would be fine on its own; however some good happenstance with the alignment as to when a bootcamp became available, and a rough timeline as to when I thought I might be ready to face the lab (and there's nothing like scheduling a date for an exam to make you pull your finger out and get cracking) and the opportunity to take the time off work as well as scrounging up the finances together for flights/accomodation/meals/bootcamp means that I am hoping that this will increase my understanding of topics, and maybe pass the lab the first time around.  At the end of the day though, pass or not pass it's all down to me (unless there is some force majeure or equipment failure).

Which parts of the lab concern me the most?  I don't think it's the technology so much - I think I have a pretty good handle on most of that, it's more along the lines of reading the question/task and reading the implications of what needs to be done.  The fact that a subsection/ticket that is worth multiple points is an all or nothing affair (partly right is 0 points) can have a significant impact on making it through or not.  Also time management - when I started the practice labs I tended to need an extra two hours, now I seem to need an extra 30 minutes, so I think my process is improving but I think controlling time is going to be a key thing, knowing when to stop and move on.

It will be interesting to hear at the bootcamp what is concerning the other candidates, I'm looking forward to it!

Breakout switches and IRB don't play well together

I've discovered another possible caveat when using dynamips for your labs, at least when using a breakout switch.  If you're using locally connected interfaces, or not using real switches it's not going to bite you though.

While working IPExpert Volume 1 Workbook Lab 7 which is a frame relay based lab focusing on bridging, I found that when using Dynamips IRB on ethernet interfaces doesn't work as expected when you're using a 3550 as your breakout switch.

This may be related to the one way CDP "feature" due to the 3550 not supporting l2protocol tunnelling on trunk port.

I found it confusing at the time since the bridging was working fine over the frame cloud but not over the ethernet.

In the end I installed one of the many USB200M Ethernet Adapters I still have before going the breakout switch route in my Ubuntu Server - which was automatically installed as eth2, I edited the lab .net file to have R5 Fa0/1 use eth2, patched it to Cat3 replacing the feed from the breakout switch and fired things up and obtained the expected connectivity.

Not necessarily a show stopper but something to be aware of when you're doing a lab and things appear to be correctly configured but aren't working.  It's good to know that I'm not alone with making this observation.  There's something certainly to be said for having plenty of interfaces directly attached to your dynamips box and not needing the breakout switch.

Started IPExpert Volume 1 Workbook

I have completed the first three labs in the IPexpert Volume 1 Workbook which have been focused on Switching.  While a good number of the tasks are relatively straight forward, some of the tasks introduced some things that I wasn't aware of until looking at the Detailed Solution Guide to track how I went.

One of the commands, that I found interesting which I don't think was specifically mentioned in any of the material I've examined so far (but is there for the looking in the config guide) introduced in one of the tasks is the "switchport protected" command.  It is basically a cut-down version of private-vlans.  The scope of function is switch wide and it basically enables "isolated ports" on the same VLAN - any port or SVI that is not specifically "switchport protected" is basically a promiscuous port.

With the lab exercises, usually initial configurations for LAN switches and Routers are provided which are designed to work on the Proctor Labs equipment and I don't have the same setup which means I need to modify the configs a little.

Below is a pretty simple bash script that uses sed to modify the configs to suit my equipment.

Status Update

Since I have sat through the IPExpert Video on Demand Course I will very shortly start to go through the Volume 1 Workbook which I think is an important thing from being a spectator to executing tasks on my own.

All in all I think that the Video on Demand course has been good value.  While described as a 4 day course, it is much more than 8 hours per day - I especially recall Day 2 lasting a long time - it covers both lectures and configuration exercises for IGPs and BGP.   While I did like the work of seeing config/show/verify connectivity and the associated troubleshooting skills - sometimes it just took a very long time to resolve issues, because its in recent memory the configuration video for IPv6 which ended up having a multicast issue was somewhat annoying to see Joe spending an hour trying to troubleshoot things of his own design - I guess it was good to show the fundamentals but it frustrating at the same time.  That said I most certainly appreciated that he followed up with what the issue was, how to replicate it and the work around was.  Considering the body of knowledge that Joe was sharing and his professional attitude in describing his thought processes and not getting worked up when things weren't acting immediately as expected - the previously mentioned annoyance I mention is really the only negative I can give for the whole experience and in its own way should be a positive (if a little time consuming)

I am certain I will be revisiting some of these videos through out my study.

Initial Review - IPExpert Video on Demand

So I mentioned earlier that I had ordered some workbooks from IPexpert which was part of one of the bundles they were offering.

As the Volume 1 and Volume 3 workbooks arrived before the R&S Video on Demand Course I did quickly flicked through the volume 1 lab workbook and took the opportunity (or excuse) to fiddle around a little and redesign my lab a little to suit (mainly to support virtual hosts into the design which I will write about that in a later post)

Anyhow - the material for this course consists of a single DVD which has 4 relatively long days of material on it simulating I guess what you may get if you were able to travel to an actual bootcamp delivered by Joe Astorino who was an IPExpert student prior to becoming one of their instructors.  Accompanying the DVD (which is a data disk, not a video disk) is a nearly 400 pages of slides as a hard copy of the slides that are presented in the video - with space below to scribble your own notes in and a separate 19 page topology diagram book which is used in the exercises.

So far I have watched all of the Day 1 Material (Focusing briefly on Study techniques before diving deep into Layer 2 technologies) and some of the Day 4 stuff (I jumped to the back because I was interested in hearing Joe's troubleshooting tips and ideas on navigating the "doc cd")

The method of delivery is firstly to discuss the technology concepts with a lecture component - primarily slide based and then to have some configuration exercises that are a basically form a small lab exercising various constraints that utilise the previously discussed topics and techniques.  The examples are actually pretty good in that you see sometimes Joe has (or appears to have) a bit of a mental block on what to do but you see how he resolves the problem (mainly by checking the doc cd) and also once or twice he introduced a couple of errors into his configs but due to his approach of validating things as you go, you can see him isolate where the issue is and correct it - which is actually pretty good in that it is basically a live demonstration on verification and picking up your mistakes without getting flustered.

If I was to directly compare this with the Audio Boot Camp - the VoD would win hands down - that's not to denigrate the audio material at all, the video just has the advantage of having the slide pack but more importantly because there are diagrams and live updates as to what is happening in the CLI, the lab exercises provide that bit of extra clarity that an audio only class cannot provide.  However while standing on packed train during rush hour, it's easier to focus on the audio material that it would be to watch a video (I don't think the video would do well on a small display really, especially for the config sections)

So while I have only viewed about a quarter of the material so far, I cant see any negatives to report and I am pleased with my purchase and again have been learning new concepts particularly on frame-relay and look forward to learning more in the routing protocols, security, qos, multicast, ipv6 and MPLS areas.

My current plan is to go through the VoD in full once before I start on the Volume 1 workbook labs and after each lab revise the topic on the area that seems to cause me dramas.

Initial Review - INE CCIE R&S Audio Boot Camp Week 1

Separate to the main topic of today but related - I just received an email saying that my material from IPExpert is now winging its way to me - something that I'm quite looking forward to receiving - I have pretty much cabled up my home lab in anticipation - just waiting on receiving a couple of copper SFPs to interconnect Cat1 Gi0/1 and Cat2 Gi0/1 and I think it should be ready to rock....

During the week I have been listening to Scott Morris going through the Internet Expert CCIE R&S Audio Bootcamp for week one.  Once you get purchase the materials, access to downloading it is very quick, there are twenty-six sections that cover layer two technologies and IPv4 routing and MPLS.  The files are in m4a form and encoded at 192kbps, which for spoken word except for the brief punctuation between sections with a few seconds of music 80s rock exerpts from bands such as Def Leppard, Queen and AC/DC amongst others is more than adequate.

The duration of each section does vary depending on the topic- from around 20 minutes up to about an hour and a half - subjects such as OSPF have 3 sections and BGP has 5 sections dedicated to them (the overall uncompressed filesize is nearly 1.5GB for the weeks material)

Anyway, the more important thing is how good is it?  Well I haven't listened to it all yet (and I'm sure I will be listening to various aspects multiple times) but I have to say that I quite enjoy Scott Morris' style of delivery- it kind of gives me the impression that he's an old friend that has come over at your place to chat about networking and knows his stuff but isn't talking down at you - he knows you're keen and wants to help you understand the technologies as well as little gotchas that can crop up.  While it appears to be fairly free flowing, there is structure and form in the presentation that builds upon previous sections.

I find the material easy to listen to but it is something that you have to focus your attention on as it is information rich - if you're multitasking, you're going to miss out on a lot of the info first time round.  Not a problem when you're riding home from work on the train with your ipod going but not so good when you're writing documents and having the lectures play in the background.  I do like the portability though in that you can take a lecture around where books/online resources are more of a hassle to drag around.  This material is specifically made as a self-paced learning material and not an audio track ripped off a video.  In some of the cases diagrams are referred to in order to explain topologies but they are usually simple to explain or reference the standard INE topology for you too look at and visual as Scott is talking.

Can this be used as a sole piece of study material? No way and its certainly not pitched that way - this is more focused on consolidating overall technologies and features into one place then you read up more on the doc CD or lab stuff out and possibly use again as a review after that.

Does this material lock you into INE? Beyond the topology diagram, its more than possible for this to be the only piece of INE material in your study materials (at present I'm heading down the path) although I'm sure it does fit within INE's overall study plan. 

This week the Week 2 material has become available on the INE site and I have already ordered and downloaded that material too, it's not as long in duration as week one and it's not recorded by Scott Morris (I think it's Anthony Sequeira by it's not specifically mentioned anywhere) the focus is on IPv6, Multicast, Security and QoS mechanisms.  Particularly the IPv6 and QoS related topics are chopped up into smaller digestible chunks than a single long and drawn out boredom festival which should be good when it comes to reviewing and being able to review key areas there.  I haven't spent much time checking this out yet, so it's probably going to get a minor review of parts later on.

In closing, am I happy with the INE Audio R&S Boot Camp Week 1 material? Yes I am - I have already picked up a couple of tricks to add to my arsenal, I find it easy to listen to and there should be some good repeatability over the course of my study.  Is it value for money? I paid for this material with my own hard earnt cash and while I haven't listened to it all so far - probably around 70% of it but I would say yes, it's amongst the least expensive training material available not including individual books (but even then you need to have a good number in your library anyway) and is of good quality and information density.

If you have already attended a bootcamp or done a video class and have been happy with what you have walked away with - then perhaps this material may be of lesser value to you, however if you are looking for an alternative view on topics I think you will get value as well.

Ordered some workbooks!

It's been some time since my last update - about two months!  The Cisco related focus has slowed down hopefully temporarily.  During this time I have been working on beefing my Alcatel-Lucent Service Routing Certification qualification. After completing 4 exams over the last 5 weeks I have the pre-requisites to reach the Network Routing Specialist II certification (just need to sit and pass the lab exam in Melbourne) and need to pass another two exams to be able to reach the Triple Play Routing Professional...  Hopefully I will be able to sit the NRS-2 lab some time this year.

The last few months have been focused on service provider capabilities - in particular I have been having a lot of fun with FreeRADIUS to perform enhanced subscriber management with the service router platform supporting the termination of DHCP and PPPoE residential subscribers and fun with IPv6 and Multicast.  I really like the way the 7750 platform handles these operations compared to how I remember my early experiences with the Cisco 6400 BRAS nearly 10 years ago, or using the Juniper ERX platform 5 years back.  I suppose the advantage of being a little later to the game is that you can learn what went well, what didn't really make sense and to have it fit into a good, coherent view has certainly been taken and extended into newer generation ethernet access technologies while still supporting "legacy" ATM and L2TP services.

Anyway, the main thrust of this blog is my CCIE pursuit, so on with that:

As the post title mentions, couple of days ago I made another investment into achieving CCIE status.  I paid for a workbook and video on demand package from the guys at IP Expert.  At the end of the day, whether I pass the lab or not is going to be down to me alone, however study materials are definitely contributors to getting there.  While evaluating which vendor I thought would work best with my ideas on study, I spent more than a few months on the Online Study List mailing list that is run by IPX looking at the kind of questions people had (related to technology/concepts, non-CCIE lab specific questions and material related clarification/questions), sometimes even answering a few myself and noticing the frequency and type of responses the IPX guys gave as well as the active community on the mailing list.  In the end, it was this that gave me a feeling that there is a good support there and other students in general appear to enjoy the materials.  I visited the INE forums a number of times but honestly I didn't go often enough to form a particular view for or against their community, I know that they have some great trainers and from what I hear their material is very good.  I guess if I didn't like what I saw on the OSL I would have investigated their forums more.

The other thing was that was in my mind is the fact that there are very few bootcamps held in Australia - the vendors that appear to get the biggest kudos for their bootcamps are Narbik's, IP Expert (they mention Sydney for bootcamps but never appear to have courses outline) and Internet Expert (highly regarded but don't appear to have courses in Australia).  Of the three, really only Narbik appears to hold bootcamps here and the timing doesn't quite seem convenient to my work life.  The other thing is the expense related to bootcamps, from what I understand Narbik's is very competitively priced and has a teaching style that seems to give nearly a religious mania to his former students, there is the flights/travel/meal expenses that need to be observed.  At present I have elected to use a video based course rather than a bootcamp, being able to replay sections on areas that I need more assistance on and to be able to run at my own pace as well as being significantly less expense seems to be an advantage.  Both IPX and INE have material in this area.

In the end, I put my money down on an IPexpert Bundle (their workbooks Volume 1 and 3 and the Lab prepation videos) and I also have ordered INE's CCIE R&S Audio Bootcamp.

Hopefully the material will arrive in the not too distant future, and I will see how things go.  By the way, at this point in time I'm not endorsing any vendor until I have the material and see what kind of impact it has on my study.  The reality is that I may need to supplement things further and may pick either or another vendor for the supplementary materials even if I'm pleased with the quality/quantity just to get a different way of presenting the same ideas/concepts.
